My name is Grand Master Sun Hwan Chung and I am a United States Tae Kwon Do Olympic NGB Martial Arts Commissioner. For the past 25 years, I have hosted a very special martial arts tournament called the Michigan Cup Championship. Instructors and students from all over the United States and from at least eight different countries participate in this exciting tournament every year!
The Michigan Cup is one of the largest martial arts championships in the Great Lakes area and has gotten bigger and better with each consecutive year. Participants in the competition are from all over Michigan as well as from Korea, England, Canada, Bermuda, India, Mexico, and even Vietnam.
Competitions will take place in four categories: breaking, forms, sparring, and weapons. Divisions are broken down by age, gender, rank, and weight. The tournament will be following the rules determined by the World Tae Kwon Do Federation.
The World Academy of Martial Arts Association, LLC./Chung’s Black Belt Academy sponsors the Michigan Cup International Championship, with myself acting as the tournament chairman. I am a licensed 9th Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, Hap Ki Do, and Tang So Do, which is the highest rank possible that one can achieve. I have been teaching martial arts in Michigan for over 45 years and ave schools in Portage, Richland, and the surrounding areas. The tournament director, Master Teresa Moon Chung, is an 8th Degree Black Belt with over 40 years experience in the martial arts and has been teaching in the United States for the past 25 years. Master Teresa Chung was the 1978 Korean Women’s National Champion and was also on the Korean Tae Kwon Do Demonstration Team.
Because Tae Kwon Do is now an Olympic event, interest in the sport is at an all time high. I am hoping that you too will join us for this truly an exciting event!
